Explain the Political Deadlock

A

Canada West and East had equal numbers of representatives in the Legislative assembly. Conflicts between these two groups made it difficult for decisions to be made as both groups would often take opposing sides

A

Great Britain encourage Confederation to make Canada more self-sufficient and less dependent on Britain. Some politicians wondered if British North America could provide anything else to the empire other than raw materials.

Explain the Cancellation of the Reciptory Treaty

A

Between 1854-1865, there was a free trade agreement between the British North America and the United States. this meant that agriculture products and raw materials were traded across the boarder between Canada and United States ended this free trade agreement, and the colonies in Canada hoped that by Unifying, they could free trade amongst themselves.
