Factors Influencing Participation Flashcards
What did Pitts & Robinson (2016) find about reasons why people stopped playing music?
Restricted ability
Wrong choice of instrument
Changes in circumstances
Physical changes
Nowhere to practice
Why might restricted ability stop musicians playing?
Fail to improve. Disheartening. Negative comparisons. Loss of confidence. Give up. Don’t believe that they are good enough.
Why might changes in circumstances stop musicians playing?
Sickness (pandemic)
Work (lack of time to devote to an instrument)
New conductor
Move house (might not be able to still be a part of that orchestra/choir)
Nowhere to practice (strict landlords/renting circumstances/neighbours)
Why might physical changes stop musicians playing?
Adaptive physical changes such as sore fingers or sore lips can put people off.
Once you’ve stopped playing for a bit, you have to go through the painful process all over again if you pick the instrument back up.
What type of research did Pitts & Robinson (2016) conduct when investigating factors in maintaining participation in music?
Conducted life history interviews with amateur musicians who stopped playing music
What is a limitation of Pitts & Robinson’s (2016) sample?
Difficult to recruit a sample for this type of research. You would probably need to know the participants. Could give rise to issues with bias.
How much the wrong choice of instrument stop musicians playing?
Can play piano by yourself but it is difficult to play instruments such as the bassoon by yourself - you would ideally need to play in some sort of ensemble to really enjoy it.
