Factors Influencing Attitudes Flashcards
How is exposure linked to preference?
The more you are exposed to it the more likely you’ll like it
What’s food neophobia?
Feat of new foods
What is the example for the exposure to food?
Japanese culture- exposure and therefore preference to fish
How do we learn food preference through social learning theory?
Through observational learning from a role model
What is the study for social learning theory of preference?
Ogden- correlations between snack food intake and raging preference between parents and preschool kids
What is the example for social learning theory of preference?
Mediterranean diets- lots of fruit, veg olive oil. Kids learned to prefer these by watching parents eat them
What is an example of food being used as a reward?
Food used as bargaining tool to encourage child to behave in certain way. Food used as reward is then preferred
What are the factors influencing attitudes to food and eating behaviour?
Exposure and learning.
Mood
What does exposure to new foods include?
Exposure, SLT and using food as a reward
Who did research into the role of learning and exposure?
Lepper et al, birch et al, Lowe et at
What did Lepper et al do?
28 preschool kids. Story about same sex kid given hupe and hule or hupe and then hule (if hupe was eaten)
What did Lepper et al find?
Group where hupe or hule was used as a reward, the food used as a reward was the one they said they preferred
What did birch et al?
4 consecutive days sat kid next to kid with different veg preference (used peer modelling)
What did birch et al find?
After 4 days, shifts in veg preference which was still the case several weeks later
What did Lowe et al do?
Kids shown video of older kids (food dudes) enjoying food they’d previously shown dislike for
What did Lowe et al find?
Use of videos led to shift in food preference including veg
Evaluation points of role of exposure
Supporting research, too simplistic, deterministic, PA, methodological issues
What are the practical applications of the role of exposure & learning?
Used to influence food preferences in kids, teach them through SLT eg food dudes
What are the methodological issues with the studies for role of exposure?
Research based on self report. Kids may say have preference but not what they actually eat. Measures preference not eating behaviour
What is it when people experience irresistible urge to eat in response to low mood?
Carbohydrate craving syndrome (carbs source of amino acid (tryptophan) building block for serotonin)
What is stress?
Subjective experience occurs when demands in person exceed resources someone has to deal with it. Can effect eating behaviour
What 2 hypotheses did conner and armitage propose in relation to stress and eating behaviour?
General effect hypothesis and individual differences hypothesis
What is the general effect hypothesis?
Stress effects consumption of food generally due to physiological changes that occur during stress
What is the individual differences hypothesis?
Stress influences eating behaviour more in some individuals(vulnerability groups)
Why is it that some individuals eating behaviour is influenced more by stress?
Based on individual differences in biology, attitudes and learned behaviours
What are the 2 vulnerability groups whose eating behaviour is influenced by stress?
Emotional and external eaters
Explain emotional eaters
Increase food intake in response to being anxious as argued that they’re unable to distinguish between anxiety and hunger
