Factors Affecting the Size of a Population Flashcards
What is population size?
Populations size is the total number of individuals in a population
What are the factors that affect the size of a population?
- natality
- mortality
- immigration
- emigration
What is natality?
Natality is the birth rate in animals or the production of seeds in plants
What is mortality?
Mortality is the death rate
What is immigration?
Immigration is when individuals move into a population and stay
What is emigration?
Emigration is when individuals leave a population and do not return
Under what conditions will populations grow?
Populations will grow when birth and immigration exceed death and emigration
Under what conditions will populations decline?
Populations will decline when death and emigration exceed birth and immigration
Under what conditions will populations remain stable?
Populations will remain stable when birth and immigration approximately equal death and emigration
What is a stable population?
A population that fluctuates around the carrying capacity
What are the characteristics of an unstable population?
- habitat deteriorates rapidly which leads to a lowering of the carrying capacity
- habitat eventually is not able to support the population, which will decrease rapidly and possibly become extinct
How does an unstable population develop?
Unstable populations develop when the population far exceeds the carrying capacity
