Factors Affecting Rates of Reactions Flashcards
What are factors that affecting the rate of reaction
- temperature
- surface area
- concentration
- catalyst
- pressure
How does increasing temperature increase the rate of reaction
Increasing temperature increases the kinetic energy in the particles. This causes the particles to vibrate and collide with each other more frequently with activation energy. This increases the rate of reaction
How does increasing the surface area increase the rate of reaction
Increasing the surface area to volume ratio means there is less space for particles to move around. If there is less space then the particles are closer together and will therefore collide with each other more frequently with activation energy. This increases the rate of reaction
How does increasing the concentration increase the rate of reaction
Increasing the concentration means there will be more particles in a confined space. This means particles will collide more with activation energy and this increases the rate of reaction
How does adding a catalyst increase the rate of reaction
Catalysts speed up reactions without getting used up and this causes the particles to collide more frequently with activation energy and this increase the rate of reaction
How does increasing the pressure increase the rate of reaction
Increasing the pressure means the particles are closer together and this causes the particles to collide more frequently with activation energy and this increases the rate of reaction
