Factors Affecting Photosynthesis Flashcards

1
Q

what is a limiting factor?

A

when one of the factors needed for a plant to photosynthesise is in short suppy and it reduces the rate of photosynthesis

Q

how does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis?

A

light is needed as an energy source. as light intensity increases, ATP and reduced NADP are produced at a higher rate.

Q

how does carbon dioxide concentration affect the rate of photosynthesis?

A

carbon dioxide is needed as a source of carbon. increasing carbon dioxide concentration increases the rate of carbon fixation in the calvin cycle and therefore the rate of TP production.

Q

how does temperature affect the rate of photosynthesis?

A

as temperature increases, the rate of enzyme-controlled reactions increases until the point where the protein denatures.

Q

why is water not a limiting factor?

A

for water potential to have become low enough to limit the rate ofphotosynthesis, the plant will have already closed its stomata and ceased photosynthesis.

Q

what does the law of limiting factors state?

A

the range of a physiological process will be limited by the factor which is in shortest supply.

Q

what is the effect of reducing light intensity on the Calvin cycle?

A

it will reduce the rate of the light-dependent stage of photosynthesis. so less ATP and reduced NADP is produced. These are needed to convert GP to TP so the concentration of GP increases. as there is less TP to regenerate RuBP, the concentration will decrease.
