Factors Affecting Obedience Flashcards

1
Q

Effects of situation on obedience

A

-M suggest situation affects obedience than it being due to individual differences, mainly obeyed (e.g. all went up to 300) tho distressed seen as part of situation(experimental procedure) than differences in individuals.
-Slater et al-obedience in virtual setting
-M varied situation to see if it was cause of obedience. Variations show less pressure from authority = lower obedience. E.g. less prestigious place less obedience, instructions over phone less obedience

Q

Effect of situation on obedience:evaluation

A

-studies were experiments in artificial setting so lacked ecological validity(validity of setting). If situation isn’t natural, perhaps conclusions regarding effect of situation aren’t sound
-participants might’ve been different in terms of personality, as there was variation in obedience, some up to 450V in basic study others stop earlier

Q

Effect of culture on obedience

A

-Slater et al- in UK similar cultural experiences to Milgram, Burger in US similar again
-However, Schurz (1976) study in Austria found 80% baseline obedience. S asked ppts to give bursts of ultrasound rather than electric shocks to learner. Ppts told bursts were painful and could damage skin
-Blass (2012) reviewed studies in US + elsewhere found 60.94% obedience in US + 65.94% in other countries. Despite large variations, average results are similar, B suggests age and gender some into play as well as differences in procedures. B conclude similarity of findings in diff cultures shows people have a powerful tendency to obey authority
-culture seen to not have too strong influence on obedience adds to conclusion obedience comes form situation and this is universal conclusion

Q

Effects of culture on obedience:eval

A

-obedience studies in diff cultures , all had differences in procedure, so we can’t be sure that culture has an affect on obedience
-other finding of studies, showed high levels of obedience despite difference in procedure, seems likely culture doesn’t affect obedience
