Factors affecting equilibrium Flashcards
What is Le Chatlier’s principle?
If a system is at equilibrium and a change I made that disturbs the equilibrium, the system responds to counteract the change until a new equilibrium is established.
What are the three factors which affect equilibrium?
Temperature, Concentration of species involved, Pressure
What colour is:
- dinitrogen tetroxide (N2O4)
- nitrogen dioxide (NO2)
- dinitrogen tetroxide is colourless
- nitrogen dioxide is brown
- reaction is reversible and a dynamic equilibrium is achieved in a closed system
In an endothermic reaction, lowering the heat will favour the forward or reverse reaction?
The reverse reaction.
In an exothermic reaction, increasing the heat will favour the forward or reverse reaction?
The reverse reaction.
Increasing pressure shifts the equilibrium towards the side with less or more moles of GAS?
Less.
Increasing volume does what to gas molecules?
Lowers the pressure.
A negative delta H = exothermic or endothermic?
Exothermic.
Reducing the volume of a container will result in an immediate increase in the concentration of all species. True or false?
TRUE.
Activation energy is what?
The minimum energy that the reacting species must possess on order to undergo a chemical reaction.
In an EXOTHERMIC reaction, the energy of the _____ is lower than the _____.
(reactants/products?)
The energy of the products is lower than that of the reactants.
In an ENDOTHERMIC reaction, the energy of the _____ is lower than the _____.
(reactants/products?)
The energy of the reactants is lower than that of the products.
The presence of a catalyst will increase the rate of reaction in both directions for a reversible reaction. TRUE OR FALSE?
True.
