Factors affecting diffusion rates in model cells Flashcards
1
Q
How would you set up such an experiment and model cell
A
- Tie one end of a section of dialysis tubing, fill it with a solution (could be starch, glucose etc.) and then tie the other end
- The tubing is then placed into another solution which is where you can add different sizes or concentrations of solutes
- Measure the changes in concentration of solute molecules inside and outside the cell this could be done through carrying out food tests and then using a colorimeter
2
Q
Why use dialysis tubing
A
Because it is partially permeable and has tiny pores for water to enter through but not for larger solutes just like a cell surface membrane
