Factors Affecting Climate Flashcards
Altitude
The higher up you go, the colder it is. This is because there is less air than below. This is because the atmosphere is thinner. There is less land up there to heat up the air.
It’s a current of air high up North. If it goes too much south, near the UK, it can create thunderstorms, with loads of rain and potential flooding.

The Jet Stream
It’s a current of air high up North. If it goes too much south, near the UK, it can create thunderstorms, with loads of rain and potential flooding.
If there is wind from the north, then it will be colder. If there is wind from the South, then it will be warmer. If there is wind from the east, then it will be the same temperature, but it will be drier because it passes over land. If there is wind from the west, it will be the same temperature, but it will be wetter because it passes over oceans.

Latitude
Distance from the Sea
The sea warms up and cools down slowly, and the land warms up and cools down faster. In the summer, the land is very hot, but the ocean is still cold from the winter. In the winter, the land is colder, but the ocean is still warm from the summer.
North Atlantic Drift/Gulf Stream
This is an ocean current which brings warm water, coming from the Caribbeans. The water heats up the air around it, making the climate warmer.

Latitude
The further from the Equator you are, the colder it gets. This is because The Equator receives the Sun’s rays directly
but the further north you go the more atmosphere the rays have to go through.
