Facial Neuropathy Flashcards
It is pain caused by a stimulus that does not normally provoke pain
Allodynia
Absence of pain in response to stimulation that would normally be painful
Analgesia
Absence of all sensation
Anesthesia
Pain cause by loss of sensory input into the central nervous system
Deafferentation pain
Unpleasant abnormal sensation, whether spontaneous or evoked; includes paresthesia
Dysesthesia
Increased sensitivity to noxious stimulation
Hyperalgesia
Increased sensitivity to all stimulation, excluding special senses
Hyperesthesia
Diminished sensitivity to noxious stimulation
Hypoalgesia
Diminished sensitivity to all stimulation, excluding the special senses
Hypoesthesia
Pain in the distribution of nerves
Neuralgia
Disturbance of function or pathologic change in a nerve
Neuropathy
Abnormal sensation, whether spontaneous or evoked
Paresthesia
It has no axonal damage, no demyelination, No neuroma
Neurapraxia
Nerve injury classifications: SEDDON
Neurapraxia
Axonotmesis
Neurotmesis
More axonal damage, demyelination, possible neuroma
Axonotmesis
Severe axonal damage, epineural discontinuity, neuroma formation
Neurotmesis
Outcome is loss of sensation, rapid recovery (days to weeks) , no microneurosurgery
Neurapraxia
Loss of sensation, slow incomplete recovery weeks to months), possible microneurosurgery
Axonotmesis
Loss of sensation, spontaneous recovery unlikely, microneurosurgery
Neurotmesis
It is a disorganized mass of collagen fibers and randomly oriented small nerve fascicles
Neuroma
It is a sharp, electric-like pain that last for brief period of seconds to I minute or longer. This is usually unilateral
Trigeminal neuralgia
Anticonvulsants for trigeminal neuralgia
Carbamazepine (400-1200)
Gabapentin (600-3200)
It is a pain resulting from deafferentation which is pain that occurs when damage to the afferent pain transmission system has occured
Atypical odontalgia
It occurs after the reactivation of virus which remained dormant in the ganglia of peripheral nerve
Postherpetic neuralgia
Burning, aching, or shocklike pain
Postherpetic neuralgia
Herpes zoster infection of the motor branches of facial nerve and auditory nerve
Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
Patients perceives a burning or aching sensation part of the oral cavity
Burning mouth syndrome
Chronic headaches
Migraine
Tension-type headache
Cluster type headache
