Facial Growth Flashcards
What is the Clavarium?
The skull cap
What is the Orofacial matrix?
The functioning spaces around which maxilla and mandible grow
Briefly describe the Functional Matrix Theory
Soft tissue matrixes determine growth, for example as the brain gets bigger it pushes on the skull causing the sutures to lay down more bone.
What is intramembranous ossification in relation to cranial vault growth? (2)
It is the process that:
Apposition (creation) of bone at suture/fontanelles when the brain is growing
Apposition of bone of the external skull and resorption of bone of the internal skull
What are fontanelles?
They are the fetus/adolescent version of sutures in the skull
What is the name of the type of bone growth that occurs for Cranial Vault Growth?
Intramembranous ossification
What is the name of the type of bone growth that occurs for Cranial Base Growth?
Endochondrial ossification
What is Endochondrial ossification?
Growth that occurs in the cranial base where bone is laid down at synchondroses (cartilage at cranial base)
What are synchondroses?
Cartliage in the cranial base
What process is responsible for maxilla growth?
Intramembranous ossification
Describe the direction in which the maxilla grows in relation to the cranial base
Downward and Forward
What are the processes which are responsible for mandible growth?
- Endochondral ossification as condylar cartilage proliferates and produces bone
- Intermembranous ossification which remodels surfaces
Describe the rate of facial growth during puberty
Rate increases
