Facial Expression muscle Flashcards
What are facial muscles?
muscles located in the subcutaneous tissue of the face which insert into the skin
What arch do the facial muscles develop from?
Second pharyngeal arch
What are the three groups of the Facial muscles?
Orbital
Nasal
Oral
What are orbital Muscles?
Two muscles which are in relation to the eye socket which control the eyelids, protecting the cornea
What are the two Orbital muscles?
Orbicularis Oculi
Corrugator Supercilii
What is the Orbicularis Oculi muscle?
Muscle that surrounds eye socket and extends into eye lids with three distinct parts, lacrimal, palpebral and orbital
What is the origin points of the Orbicularis Oculi muscle?
Lacrimal Part: Lacrimal Bone
Orbital Part: Medial Orbital Margin
Palpebral Part: Medial Palpebral Ligament
What is the insertion of the parts of the Orbicularis Oculi muscle?
Skin around the orbit along with tarsal plates of eyelids
What is the function of the Orbicularis Oculi muscle?
Lacrimal Part: Involved in drainage of tears
Palpebral Part: Gently closes eyelids
Orbital Part: Tightly closes eyelids
What is the Corrugator Supercilii muscle?
Much smaller muscle located posteriorly to the Orbicularis Oculi muscle
What is the origin of the Corrugator Supercilii muscle?
Superciliary arch
What is the insertion of the Corrugator Supercilii muscle?
Inserts into the skin of the eyebrows
What is the action of the Corrugator Supercilii muscle?
Pulls the eye brows together forming vertical wrinkles
What is the clinical relevance of the Orbital muscles paralysis?
The eye cannot shut causing the cornea to dry out in a process known as exposure keratitis.
What is the Nasal muscle group?
Muscles associated with moving the nose and skin surrounding it
How many muscles are in the Nasal muscle group?
Three, namely;
Nasalis
Procerus
Depressor Septi Nasi
