Faces Flashcards
Nine clues to deceit
1) micro or flashing expressions;
2) squelched expressions - a sign of multiple emotions performed deliberately;
3) reliable muscle patterns - those difficult to control e.g. Eye orbiting muscle,
4) blink rates: people lying will often blink more (regardless of eye contact);
5) pupil dilation - increased for arousal, fear or other emotions they can’t conceal;
6) tears - can be faked so don’t overly rely on what they are communicating;
7) asymmetrical expressions (apart from contempt) usually indicate trying to use one emotion to override another
8) timing - true emotional indicators are usually expressed simultaneously, whereas feigned expressions occur sequentially. Eg someone pretending to be outraged may cross arms then scowl;
9) duration - genuine expressions of emotion rarely persist beyond give seconds and almost never beyond ten
Assymetry
Smiles, frowns, and shrugs that are one-sided mask what a person is really feeling. Natural, truthful gestures typically occur evenly on both sides.
