Face and Neck Regions chapter 1 Flashcards
Frontal region
includes the forehead and the area above the eyes
Orbital region
Includes the eyeball and all its supporting structures that are contained in the ORBIT of the skull which is the bony eye socket
What are all regions of the face?
frontal, orbital, nasal, infraorbital, zygomatic, buccal, oral, and mental regions.
What is the main feature of the nasal region?
external nose
where is the root of the nose located?
between the eyes
the tip of the nose is the
apex of the nose
Nostrils are called
Naris or nares
what are nares seperated by?
the midline nasal septum
what is Alae?
wing like cartilaginous structures of the nose
Infraorbital region
located inferior to the orbital region and lateral to the nasal region
Zygomatic region
overlies the bony support for the cheek ZYGOMATIC ARCH
Zygomatic Arch
extends from just below the lateral margin of the eye toward the middle part of the external ear
Temporomandibular Joint
inferior to the zygomatic arch and just anterior to the external ear
Buccal region
composed of the soft tissue of the cheek
masseter muscle
A strong muscle that is palpated when the patient clenches their teeth
the sharp angle of the lower jaw inferior to the earlobe
angle of the mandible
the parotid salivary gland
can be palpated on a patient in the buccle region as well as in the zygomatic region and is located irregularly from the zygomatic arch down the posterior border of the lower jaw
the oral region contains the
lips and oral cavity
the upper and lower lips are fleshy fold that mark the gateway to the
oral cavity proper
each lip begins with the vermilion border which is
redder in color with variations as to tone
the vermilion zone
darker reddish appearance than the surrounding skin,
the lips are outlined from surrounding skin by a transition zone called the
mucocutaneous junction
the midline of the upper lip extending downward from the nasal septum is a vertical groove called
the Philtrum
the thicker area of the midline of the upper lip is the
tubercle of the upper lip
maxilla
upper jaw
mandible
lower jaw
the upper and lower lips meet at each corner of the mouth called
the labial commissure
what is the major feature of the mental region of the face?
the chin
the midline of the mandible is the
mandibular symphysis
