Fabric Mechanics Flashcards
What is the ‘applied force’ of a machine?
The energy or effort provided to a machine to do work.
What is an axis?
The centre around which a wheel or component rotates
What is buckling?
The bulging, bending, bowing, or kinking of an object as result of compressive stress.
What do compressive tests do?
A force that attempts to flatten or squeeze a material
What is corrosion fatigue?
The disintegration of material due to rust, pitting or cracking. Usually caused by environmental conditions.
What is creep? What else is it known as?
The slow deformation of material over time. Also known as yielding.
What is the difference between a driven pulley and a driver pulley?
Driven pulley = pulley receives power from the driver pulley via belt
Driver pulley= pulley attached to a power source (electric motor)
What is ductile metal?
A metal that can be drawn, formed, or stretched without breaking.
What is fatigue life?
The amount of time an object or fabric can carry a load before it fails. Fatigue life shortens as the stress on the object increases.
What is a fulcrum?
A pivot point of a lever, or the point around which an object turns.
What is inertia?
The tendency of an object at rest to stay at rest, or an object in motion to stay in motion, unless acted on by an outside force.
