Fabric Finishes Flashcards
Brushed finish
Surface is brushed and raised to feel soft
Calendaring
Name of ironing process that adds sheen to fabric
It’s folded in half and pressed under rollers/calenders at high temp and pressures
Variation in the pressure produces a ripple effect on the surface
Colorfastness
Ability of fabric to retain the dyes even after repetitive washing
It will not fade with collurfast
Flame retardant finish
Applied for fabric surface to reduce tendency to burn and reduce flame spread
Anti pilling finish
Formation of smalls balls of extra fibres on surface of fabric
Pilling resistant finish aims to minimise formation of these balls
Shrinkage control
Minimise fabric tension during finishing to reduce shrinkage during washing/laundering
Stone washing
Process of washing fabric (especially heavy fabric like denim, canvas) with stones so that they look worn and to fade colours; stone washing can give softness and flexibility to these fabrics
Stain resistant
Resists stains
Many branded finishes eg Teflon and scotch guard
Waterproof
Females fabric completely resistant to water penetration
Different types of waterproof coatings given to fabric that makes it water resistant; these fabrics are used to make rainwear , cycling apparel etc
Coatings given to the inside of the fabric
Water repellent
Applied to fabric which makes it repel water without making it inpervious to it
Process is supposed to produce fabric that will resist water but at the same time breath ie doesn’t nor entirely prevent the absorption of water
Crease/wrinkle resistant
Keeps fabric from wrinkling to minimum
