FA4 Megacities Flashcards
What’s a megacity?
metropolitan area with over 10 million people
List three developing megacities.
Dhaka, Lagos and Karachi
List three developed megacities.
Tokyo, New York, London
Why might there be three different populations for a megacity?
Population values are dependent on the given boundaries. City boundaries (inner city), metropolitan boundaries (outer cities) and urban boundaries (OUTER city - countryside)
What is the Heat Island Effect?
Urban areas trap heat because of the hard surfaces which are darker and therefore absorb more heat. The heat contained is slowly released during the night only to repeat the process during the day, making them permanently warmer than countryside.
What are the main causes and affects of air pollution in urban areas?
increasing population, industrialisation and increased car use
Why do people criticise the Kuznet’s curve?
it’s considered theory not fact, typically either the rich get richer and produce more CO2 or the polluting problems are moved not solved.
