F3 Flashcards
Spermatogenesis
The production of sperm
Spermatogenesis process
Mitosis:
Spermatogonia (2n) -> Primary spermatocyte (2n)
Meiosis I:
Primary spermatocyte -> 2 secondary spermatocytes (1n)
Meiosis II:
Secondary spermatocytes (1n) -> 4 spermatids (1n)
What role does FSH play in spermatogenesis and testosterone production?
Stimulates spermatogenesis indirectly by stimulating sustentocytes to release ABP.
ABP keeps concentration of testosterone high, promoting spermatogenesis.
What affect does inhibin have on FSH release?
Inhibin inhibits FSH release.
ABP
Keeps concentration of testosterone high, promoting spermatogenesis.
What role does LH play in spermatogenesis and testosterone production?
LH stimulates interstitial cells to secrete testosterone.
Testosterone is synthesized from ______ and converted to _____.
Synthesized from cholesterol;
Converted to DHT
Testosterone
Promotes spermatogenesis;
Triggers activity in accessory glands;
Induces development of secondary sex characteristics
What are three results from testosterone deficiency?
Atrophy of accessory organs;
Semen volume declines;
Erection/ejaculation are impaired
What secondary sex characteristics are induced by testosterone?
Pubic/facial/chest hair, deepening of voice, increase in muscle mass, sex drive, bones grow
