F215 Flashcards
Consumer
Living organisms that feeds on other organisms.
What is trophic level
The stage in a food chain
Producer
Plants that convert light energy to chemical energy.
Decomposers
Organisms that feed on dead organic matter.
Ecosystem (tick)
All living and non living components in a specific habitat and their interactions.
Succession
Directional change in a community of organisms over time.
Habitat (tick)
A place where an organisms lives.
Niche (tick)
Role of organism in the ecosystem.
Primary succession. (Tick)
It starts with bare ground and colonised by pioneer plants. Succession take place in a series of stages called sere. The final stage is climax community which is relative stable and is in dynamic equilibrium with its environment.
Climax community (tick)
The final stage in succession in dynamic equilibrium with its environment.
Difference between population and community (tick)
Population = is one species.
That live in the same place and at the same time.
Community= is more than one species.
That live in the same place and at the same time.
Carrying capacity
Maximum size of a population supported in a particular habitat.
Interspecific competition
Competition is between individuals of different species.
e.g. Red and Grey squirrels compete for the same food.
Intraspecific competition
Competition is between individuals of the same species.
Competing for mate, food or best site
Conservation
Preservation
Conservation is the maintenance of biodiversity but allowing sustainable production.
Preservation protects species by leaving their habitat untouched.
