F214 Module 1 - Communication And Homeostasis Flashcards
Homeostasis
Maintenance of the internal environment in a constant state despite external changes
Negative feedback
A process that brings about a reversal of any change in conditions, to ensure an optimum steady state can be maintained.
Positive feedback
Process that increases any change detected by the receptors.
Ectotherm
Organism that relies on external sources of heat to regulate it’s body temperature.
Endotherm
Organism that can use internal sources of heat, such as that generated by metabolism in the liver, to maintain its body temperature.
Generator potential
A small depolarisation caused by sodium ions entering the cell
Action potential
Achieved when the membrane is depolarised to a value of +40mV. All or nothing response. To reach it? The membrane depolarised and reaches a threshold level, then sodium ions enters the axon and an action potential is reached.
Stimulus
Any change in the environment that causes a response
