Austria was economically weak so it supported the alliance to create a Greater Germany
Hitler had tried to take over Austria in 1934 but Mussolini had stopped him - now the two were allies
With the success of 1936-1937 to boost him, Hitler turned to Austria in 1938
Austrian people were mostly German and in Mein Kampf Hitler had outlined that the two belonged as one nation
There was a strong Nazi party in Germany that staged demonstrations calling for a union with Germany
Hitler told Chancellor Schuschnigg that the only way to solve the problems was to agree to a plebiscite
In March 1938 Hitler sent his troops into Austria to ensure a trouble free plebiscite and 99.75% of people voted in favour of the alliance
There was no military action from Britain and France
The British Prime Minister thought the Germans were right
Hitler won Austria’s soldiers, weapons and rich deposits of gold and iron
Britain and France were not prepared to defend a flawed Treaty
Hitler was getting more daring
