F&R 1 Terms Flashcards
Simple ion
an ion composed of only one atom
Element
one atom of a symbol on the Periodic Table
Complex ion (molecular ion)
composed of more than one atom held together by covalent bonds
Molecule
neutral species held together by covalent bonds
Macroscopic (bulk) viewpoint
viewing the physical substance
Microscopic (particle) viewpoint
utilizes formulas that represent the discrete, minute particles present within matter
Elemental substance
composed entirely of one atom
Compound
composed of at least two different elements
Ionic compound
consists entirely of charged particles
Molecular compound
the bulk substance consists entirely of myriads of non-charged particles (molecules) that match the formula of the bulk compound
Solution
a substance (solute) dissolved in a solvent so that the solute particles become widely dispersed amid the solvent
