F-A Evaluation Flashcards
1
Q
STRENGTH: Research evidence
A
- Marcus-Newhall conducted meta analysis of 49 displaced aggression
- PP’s who were provoked but unable to lash out directly at source of frustration were more likely to aggress against an innocent party than those who weren’t provokend
- Displaced aggression is a reliable phenomenon, supporting the hypothesis and increasing its validity.
2
Q
LIMITATION: evidence that aggression is not cathartic
A
- Bushman found pps who vented their anger by hitting a punchbag became MORE angry
- Venting to reduce anger can fuel aggression but this is the suggested advice.
- Casts doubt on validity of assumptions of the hypothesis
3
Q
STRENGTH: The original hypothesis was reformulated to fit the evidence
A
- Berkowitz suggested that frustration is one of many aversive stimuli that creates aggression
- Aggression is triggered by negative feelings generally rather than frustation specifically. The outcome of frustration can be a range of negative responses.
- This is a strength as it highlights the flexibility of the hypothesis
