silk road
A series of trade routes connected Aisa and Europe. These stretched for thousands of miles and not only allowed goods to be traded but cultures and ideas such as Buddhism and Christianity to be spread
Goods traded
The Mongols helped to protect the Silk Road and encourage the movement of certain products and ideas. Silk, porcelain, gunpowder, and the compass were some of the products the Mongols used and brought to the west of Europe

The Mongols helped to strengthen trade by transporting certain goods OUT of their territory.

Marco Polo
Italian explorer who traveled the silk road to learning about different people and cultures. He interacted with the Mongols and shared many new ideas when he returned to Europe
Caravan
Merchants traveled in large groups along the silk road. These groups traveled with hundreds of camels at a time and often had armed guards for protection
Genghis Khan
Ruler and leader of the Mongols who started the empire and continued to conquer lands throughout his lifetime. He was known for his cruel and brutal acts, leaving the empire up to his sons (and grandson) to carry on.
Nomadic
People who did not live in one spot. They lived in tents that could be picked up and moved easily. Oftentimes, Mongols followed their herds of animals.
Yurts
The tent-like structures were used by the Mongols because they were portable, yet large enough to live in and be comfortable. This was a round structure, typically covered by felt or animal skins.
Steppes
Rolling and grassy plains that the Mongols traveled across. Many of these can be found from the Black Sea through northern China.
Dynasty
The unified regions were broke apart by the Mongols. China and Korea reverted back to this system later in time.
Two major characteristics of the Mongols
- The Mongols were most well known for their ability to wage war and conquer lands. They were constantly on the move and had excellent and accurate archery skills. 2. The Mongols were also known for their ability to ride on horseback. They started riding at a very young age and continued throughout their life.
