EZIO Entrance Exam Prep Flashcards
What is the EZ-IO Indication Statement?
For intraosseous access anytime in which vascular access is difficult to obtain in emergent, urgent or medically necessary cases for up to 24 hours.
For patients ≥ 12 years old, the device may be extended for up to 48 hours in the U.S.when alternate intravenous access is not available or reliably established.
What are the 5 contraindications to IO access, per the EZ-IO IFU?
- Fracture in target bone
- Infection at area of insertion
- Excessive tissue (severe obesity) and/or absence of adequate anatomical landmarks
- IO access or attempted IO access in target bone within previous 48 hours
- Previous, significant orthopedic procedure at the site, prosthetic limb or joint.
Where are the targeted insertion sites for the EZ-IO systems? Why?
IO vascular access is usually placed in the proximal and distal ends (epiphyses) of long bones due to the thinner compact bone and abundance of cancellous (spongy) bone at these sites. Within the epiphysis of the medullary space lies a vast system of blood vessels.Red and yellow marrow are found in all bones.1
What are the benefits of the Proximal Humerus Site?
- 3 seconds to heart with medication/fluids1*
- Flow rates average 6.3 L/hr. under pressure2*
- Lesspain reported with saline flush3*‡
- Less medication required for painmanagement during infusion3*‡
List all of the Insertion sites for the EZ-IO Vascular access system.
The single use sterile needle sets are all 15-gauage and available in 3 lengths. What are the lengths and the according color/ weight indication?
How many black lines must be visible above the skin prior to engaging the driver for EZ-IO Use?
At least ONE black line must be visible above the skin.
What are the 2 positioning options for proximal humerus site identification?
- Place the arm tight against the body; rotate the hand so the palm is facing outward, thumb pointing down.
- Place the patient’s hand over the abdomen with arm tight to the body
What is the insertion angle for the Proximal Humerus to ensure placement will provide optimal vascular access?
Insert needle set into the greater tubercle at an approximately 45-degree angle, as if aiming toward the opposite hip.
What are the steps for proper site identification in using the Proximal Tibia in an adult?
Insertion site is approximately 3 cm below the patella and approximately 2 cm medial to the tibial tuberosity along the flat aspect of the tibia (depending on patient anatomy). Aim the needle set tip at a 90-degree angle to the bone for insertion.
It is essential to perform a rapid normal saline (NS) syringe flush into the IO space before attempting to infuse fluids. How much should the rapid flush be in adults? in children? Why is this perfromed?
A rapid syringe flush of 5-10 mL normal saline in adults and 2-5 mL normal saline in infants and small children helps displace the marrow and fibrin in the medullary space, facilitating effective infusion rates.
