What happened in march?
Start of the eruption, mostly lava but had very little threat to local communities
What happened on April 14th?
On April 14th a new phase of eruptions started that were much more violent and explosive. Over a period of 7 days these eruptions belched huge quantities of ash into the atmosphere.
What were the local impacts?
- Heavy ash particles fell to the ground forcing hundreds of people to be evacuated from their farms and villages
- Local agricultural land was coated in a thick layer of ash losing Iceland a big part of its economy

What happened due to the glacier above the volcano?
Huge amount of meltwater generated and sections of embankment had to be demolished to allow flood water to pass
