eyes key terms Flashcards
what is a conjuctivia?
conjuctivia is a thin membrane which covers the cornea
what is the function of conjuctivia?
to protect the eyeball
what is a cornea?
cornea is the front part of the scelera
what is the function of the cornea?
cornea allows the passage of light while refracting it.
what is scelera?
its a tough connective tissue
what is the function of the scelera?
it provides protection against mechanical damage, it also allows attacthemnt of muscle tissues.
what is a iris?
it is the coloured part of the eye, which contains the radial and circular muscles.
what is the function of iris?
to adjust the amount of light entering the eye, by controlling the size of the pupil.
what is a pupil?
its a gap between the iris.
what is the function of the pupil?
allows light to go through. its size can be varied.
what is the aqueous humour?
it is transparent watery liquid which is found at the front part of the eye.
what is the function of the aqueous humour?
maintain the shape of the chamber part of the eye.
what is a lens?
transparent and elastic ovoid(biconcave). held in place behind the cornea.
what is the function of the lens?
changes shape to adjust the accomodation of light onto the retina.
what is the suspensory liagements?
liagements which connect the cilary body to the lens.
what is the function of suspensory liagment?
to transfer the tension of the wall of eyeball to the lens, to make lens thinner.
what is the viterous humour?
transparent, jelly like material filling the rear part of the eyeball.
what is the function of the viterous humour?
maintain the shape of the rear part of the eye, and provides support for the lens.
what is the retina?
retina contains light senstive cels.
what is the function of the retina?
the light sensitve cells(rods and cones) can intiated impulses when stimulated approaitely.
what is a fovea?
fovea at the back of the retina, rich in cones.
what is the function of the fovea?
to provide high visual acuity and colour vision.
what is choroid?
is a pigment , behind the eyeball, behind the retina which is rich in cones
what is the function of the choroid?
contain blood vessels to retina, which prevent light reflection to eyeball.
