Eyes Flashcards
What are the functions of the eyes
The eyes scan our environment constantly taking in rays of light produced or reflected from objects. We can see detail and colour, judge speed and distance.
When does the iris change size?
It changes depending if there is light or dark
Structure of the eye
Light is reflected by objects we look at and travels rays into our eyes.
When we view distant objects the light travels in almost parallel lines so there is little need for refraction (bending) to focus them on the light sensitive surface at the back of the eye.
What is AMD
An eye condition (age related muscular degeneration)
Diagnosis for AMD
Test vision and examine retina look for yellow deposits under retina
Treatment for AMD
There is no treatment but vision aids can help reduce the effects on your life
Effects of AMD
- blurred/ distorted vision
- struggle to see in the middle of your vision
- objects looking smaller than usual
- colours seeming less bright than they used too
- hallucinations
- effects the cones in the back of the eye (colour)
What is cataracts?
Dysfunction condition of the eye. Cataracts occur when changes in the lens of the eye cause it to become less clear
Effects of cataracts
- blurry vision
- driving at night becomes difficult
- increased difficulty with vision at night
- need for brighter light for reading
- seeing halos around light
- fading or yellowing of colours
Cause of cataracts
Develops when ageing or injury changes the tissue that makes up your eye lens. Some inherited genetics disorders that cause other health problems can increase your risk of cataracts. It can also be caused by other eye conditions, past eye surgery or medical conditions such as diabetes
Treatment of cataracts
Cataracts surgery or laser eye surgery. They remove the lense and replace it with an artificial lense
What is glaucoma?
An eye condition where the optic nerve, which connects your eye to brain, becomes damaged. It can lead to loss of vision
Cause of glaucoma
Occurs when the fluid in the eye cannot drain properly, which increases the pressure. It generally affects people who are elderly
Symptoms of glaucoma
- severe eye pain
- nausea and vomiting
- sudden onset of visual disturbance, often in low light
- blurred vision
- halos around the light
- reddening of the eye
Treatment for glaucoma
- eye drops
- laser treatment
- surgery
