Anatomy
A
• The eye is a direct extension of the brain
• The optic nerve (II) is only sensory
• The oculomotor (III), trochlear (IV) & abducens (VI) nerves
control eye movement & pupil size
• Each eye has 6 external ocular muscles
• Sphincter muscles control the iris
• Ciliary muscles control the lens

Visual Examination
A
• Assess cranial nerves II to VIII • Visual acuity • Ocular alignment • Colour vision • Ophthalmoscopy • Including inspection of the eye and pupillary examination

A
Eyes usually parallel, except when converging, otherwise a squint is present

Congenital red-green blindness is an X-linked recessive condition affecting
7% of males

A
– 10-20cm for anterior eye view
– 1-2cm for fundus view
