Anatomy

A

• The eye is a direct extension of the brain
• The optic nerve (II) is only sensory
• The oculomotor (III), trochlear (IV) & abducens (VI) nerves
control eye movement & pupil size
• Each eye has 6 external ocular muscles
• Sphincter muscles control the iris
• Ciliary muscles control the lens

• Assess cranial nerves II to VIII
• Visual acuity
• Ocular alignment
• Colour vision
• Ophthalmoscopy
• Including inspection of the eye and
pupillary examination
