WHAT IS THE TREATMENT FOR STYE
- soak a cloth in warm water, and press against the eye three to four times a day for 1 week
what are the features of stye
- painful swelling/lump that is located at the eyelid margin
- a small, yellow pus filled spot may be visible
- occasionally, multiple styes involve the entire eyelid
- eye may be red and watery
what questions do you ask someone with styes
- how long have they had it for?
- are the symptoms unilateral or bilateral
- any other symptoms ?
what other advise do you provide to someone with stye
- do not puncture the stye
- avoid using eye make up or contact lenses until the eye area as heeled
which over the counter treatment can be used for sye
- dibrompropamidine isetionate (golden eye ointment)
what is blepharitis
this is a chronic irritation and inflammation of the eyelids
what is the symptoms of blepharitis
- crusting, swelling and redness of the eyelids
- eyes may feel dry
- a gritty feeling
- burning sensation in the eye
- skin flaked on the eyelids
- small ulcers on the eyes
- sensitivity to light
what is the treatment for styes if its not controlled by the hygiene alone
- ocular lubricant (i.e carbomer, hypromellose) for the dry eye
- topical antibiotic such as chloramphenicol and fusidic acid for the infection
what are the points to provide to a patient about the cleaning of blepharitis
- soak a clean flannel or cotton wool in warm water and a mild cleanser [baby shampoo] in a 1:10 ratio, and gently wiping along the lid margins to clear any lid debris
- gently clean twice daily initially, then once daily as symptoms approve
what is the first line treatment of blepharitis
a warm compress (a clean cloth warmed with hot water) should be applied to closed eyelids for 5–10 minutes once or twice daily — compresses should not be too hot as this may burn the skin.
!! this should be continued even when symptoms are well controlled to minimize the number and severity of the relapses
