Eyemovements And The Perception Of Motion (6) Flashcards
How do we move our eyes
3 pairs of extraocular antagonistic muscles
Main types of eye movements*
Vergence
Saccadic
Pursuit
VOR - vestibular ocular reflex
Vergence movements
Points both foveae at a near/target further away
Prevents double vision*
During this, the eyes rotate in opposite directions
Saccadic movements
Moves the foveae to a point of interest
Fast and accurate
Effectively blind during each saccade
Both eyes move together
Pursuit movements
Keep foveae on a moving target
Involuntary
VOR movements
Keep the image of the world stationary on the retina when we move our head
4 ways to elicit the perception of motion*
Real physical movement
Apparent movement - must be just right to be seen, not too fast/slow
Induced movement e.g. moon & clouds
Motion after effects -still feel like moving after
