Eyelids Flashcards
Swelling of eyelids: Blepharoedema
~allergic reaction
Antihistamines: topical/systemic
Anti-inflammatory drugs
Inflammation of eyelid: Blepharitis
Infection, trauma, IM-disease, neoplasia
Blepharospasm
Squinting or spasm of the eyelids
Indicates pain
Neonatal Puppy
Neonatal Opthalmia
Infection prior to opening of eyes (<14 days old)
Gently open, flush, apply topical antibiotic ointment, keep cornea moist
Congenital micropthalmia & eyelid agenesis
Corrective surgery required
Entropion
inward rolling of eyelid causes hair to rub on cornea
wicks tears onto face
eyelid tacking= temporary solution
Hotz-Celsus correction: permanent solution
What is it called when the entropion resolves once topical anesthetic is applied?
Spastic entropion
happening because retropulsion of eye into socket due to pain
Ectropion
“normal” for some breeds
exposes the conjuctiva and leads to chronic irritation
surgical correction if chronic ocular discharge, etc.
Cilia that emerges through the Meibomian gland opening
Cilia that emerges through the conjuctiva: Ectopic Cilia
Trichiasis: hair in a normal position but growing in an abnormal direction.
Another example is “nose fold trichiasis” where a pug like dog has hair/skin pushing back onto the eye
Are canine eyelid tumors malignant or benign most commonly?
Usually benign in dogs
Are feline eyelid tumors usually malignant or benign?
Malignant usually
Cherry Eye: it’s important to replace the gland and not try to incise it out
Hereditary and will become a bilateral disease over time
Follicular conjunctivitis: common in dogs under 2 years
Present with “conjunctivitis”
Then you see lymphoid follicles behind the TEL
If no other cause found and cornea doesn’t take up stain then treat with topical steroids: BNP-HC or NP-Dex
