Eye Movements Flashcards
What is the vestibulo-ocular reflex?
The VOR moves the eye to compensate for head movements and so maintains visual stability
Smooth pursuit eye movements
These allow the observer to track a visual target and so keep the target stable on the retina—even if this is at the expense of an equal and opposite movement of the background.
Saccadic eye movements
The eye jumps rapidly to point the eye at a new location
What is ECCENTRICITY?
The distance from the current FIXATION POINT to the TARGET.
Which seems to have a larger effect on saccadic latency than eccentricity?
Stimulus Properties
What does fixation release aka fixation disengagement accomplish?
Speeds oculomotor orientation by releasing the fixation system.
What is the “remote distractor effect”?
The increase in saccadic latency that results when the target for the saccade is presented concurrently with a distractor. Not the same as the gap effect during which the fixated item disappears before the new target appears.
