Inspect orbits and eyelids
Visually inspect orbit and eyelids from front and sides.
Examine conjunctiva, sclera and lacrimal apparatus
Remember to pull down and have patient look up, not necessary to move eyelid
Examine the cornea
Hold penlight close to eye and move it around while keeping pointed at the cornea
Examine the pupils
Dim lights. Consensual, direct reflex. Swinging light test, and then accommodation. May be good idea to have Pt. look at corner of room so they don’t focus on your light.
Examine extraoccular muscles
Stand two feet from Pt while they focus on distant object, hold out penlight and check for symmetry in reflection. Have patient follow finger in 6 cardinal positions and then move finger in closer for accommodation and convergence
