Eye Conditions Flashcards

1
Q

A

Eyelid turns outward.

Leaves the inner eyelid surface expose and prone to irritation.

More common in older adults, and it generally affects only the lower eyelid.

Q

Entropian

A

Medical condition in which the eyelid ( usually the lower lid) folds inward.

It is very uncomfortable, as the eyelashes continuously rub against the cornea causing irritation.

Caused by genetic factors.

Q

Trichiasis

A

Common eyelid problem.

Eyelashes grow inwards toward the eye.
The lashes rub against the cornea, the conjunctiva, and the inner surface of the eyelids.

This irritates the eye.

Q

Plugged Meibomian Glands

A

The tarsal plate along the rims of the eyelid inside the tarsal plate.

They produce meibum, an oily substance that prevents evaporation of the eyes tear film.

Q

Subconjunctival hemorrhage

A

The wall of a small blood vessel within the conjunctiva may break spontaneously or from injury, causing a red area on the sclera.

Appears as a bright red or dark red patch on the white of the eye.

Q

Conjunctivitis

A

Inflammation or swelling of the conjunctiva.

The conjunctiva is a thin transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.

Often called pinkeye.

Common eye disease especially in children.

Q

Conjunctival cysts

A

There are two main kinds of conjunctible cyst :

1) retention cyst: results from a blocked duct, which causes a buildup of eye secretions. The buildup creates a cyst.
2) inclusion cyst; happens when a piece of epithelium tissue (top layer) from the conjunctiva folds into the connective tissue of your conjunctiva.

Q

Nevus

16
Q

Pterygium

A

Growth of the Conjectiva or mucus membrane that covers the white part of your eye over the cornea.

Benign or non-cancerous and often shaped like a wedge.

17
Q

Corneal edema and opacities

A

Cornea edema is swelling of the cornea.

It’s caused by fluid buildup in the cornea.

When untreated, corneal edema can lead to cloudy vision.

18
Q

Abrasions

A

A corneal abrasion is a superficial scratch on the clear, protective window at the front of your eye(cornea).

The cornea can be scratched by contact with dust, dirt, sand, wood shavings, metal particles, contact lenses or even the edge of a piece of paper.

19
Q

Lacrimal Lake

A

Pool of tears in the lower conjunctival fornix , in the medial angle of the eye around the Lacrimal Coruncle, which drains into the opening of the tear drainage system.

20
Q

Neovascularization

A

Fine, superficial neovascularization is most commonly seen in contact lens wearers is common also can be associated with blepharitis, superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis, vernal conjunctivitis and many others.

21
Q

CLARE - Contact lens induced acute redeye

A

Typically acute with a very sudden onset.

You can wake up abruptly in the middle of the night with serious eye pain and copious tearing.

An eye suffering from CLARE will usually also be very sensitive to light.

it is not unusual for one eye to suffer from CLARE while the other eye is fine.

Q

CCC- Central Cornea cloudy

A
