Eye Conditions Flashcards
Blepharitis
Inflammation of the eyelids.
Usually involves a part of the eyelid where the eyelashes grow and affect both eyelids.
Commonly occurs when Tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes become clogged.
Ectropion
Eyelid turns outward.
Leaves the inner eyelid surface expose and prone to irritation.
More common in older adults, and it generally affects only the lower eyelid.
Entropian
Medical condition in which the eyelid ( usually the lower lid) folds inward.
It is very uncomfortable, as the eyelashes continuously rub against the cornea causing irritation.
Caused by genetic factors.
Trichiasis
Common eyelid problem.
Eyelashes grow inwards toward the eye.
The lashes rub against the cornea, the conjunctiva, and the inner surface of the eyelids.
This irritates the eye.
Plugged Meibomian Glands
The tarsal plate along the rims of the eyelid inside the tarsal plate.
They produce meibum, an oily substance that prevents evaporation of the eyes tear film.
Meibomian
Located in the tarsal plate along the rims of the eyelid inside the tarsal plate.
They produce meibum, an oily substance that prevents evaporation of the eyes tear film.
Chalazion
Caused by non infectious meibomian gland occlusion.
Becomes a small no tender nodule in the eyelid center.
Hordeolum
Caused by infection.
Remains painful and localizes ti an eyelid margin.
Subconjunctival hemorrhage
The wall of a small blood vessel within the conjunctiva may break spontaneously or from injury, causing a red area on the sclera.
Appears as a bright red or dark red patch on the white of the eye.
Conjunctivitis
Inflammation or swelling of the conjunctiva.
The conjunctiva is a thin transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye.
Often called pinkeye.
Common eye disease especially in children.
Conjunctival cysts
There are two main kinds of conjunctible cyst :
1) retention cyst: results from a blocked duct, which causes a buildup of eye secretions. The buildup creates a cyst.
2) inclusion cyst; happens when a piece of epithelium tissue (top layer) from the conjunctiva folds into the connective tissue of your conjunctiva.
Papillae
Clinically appears more red on its surface and more pale at its base.
Follicles
Small dome shaped nodules without a prominent central vessel.
More pale on its surface and more red at its base.
Nevus
Colored growth on or in your eye.
Sometimes called a freckle of the eye, it is similar to a mole on your skin.
Can be in the front of your eye, around the iris or underneath the retina at the black of the eye.

Pinguecula
Benign or non-cancerous growth that develops on your eye.
They occur on the conjunctiva.
