Pathway of Vision
Images in the light -> Cornea -> Pupil -> Lens -> Retina -> Optic Nerve -> Optic Tracts -> Brain
Corneal Abrasion
Particle or large object scratches the eye
Treatment: Examine eye for debris -> Rinse eye -> Cover eye -> Refer
Periorbital Hematoma(black eye)
MOI: Direct blow
S/S: Swelling, discoloration, Pain
Treatment: Cold compress
Orbital Blowout Fracture
MOI: Blunt force trauma
S/S: Pain, Swelling, Double vision, Numbness in cheek
Treatment: Cover both eyes, Cold compress
Hyphemia
Blood in the anterior chamber(between cornea and iris)
MOI: Blunt force trauma
S/S: Decreased vision, Blood in chamber
Treatment: Refer
Conjunctivitis(pink eye)
Infection of conjunctiva(outer most layer of the eye)
MOI: Viral, Allergic, Bacterial
S/S: Discomfort, redness, inflammation, discharge
Treatment: Refer, Medication
Outer Ear
Auricle(visible part)
Middle of ear
Acts as a transformer passing on vibrations
Inner ear
Deep within bones of the skull
Analyzes sound waves
Maintains balance
Cauliflower Ear
Deformity of the ear(collection of blood between ear cartilage and skin)
MOI: Repetitive trauma/friction
S/S: Deformity
Treatment: Drain, Compressive bandage
Swimmers Ear
Infection of the skin covering the ear( caused by bacteria and excessive water exposure)
S/S: Ear feels full, May Itch, Swelling
Treatment: Avoid Water, Medication
Foreign Bodies in Ear
Insects/Object gets Trapped
S/S: Pain, Fever, Odor, Nausea
Treatment: Flushing or Surgery
