Eye Anatomy Flashcards
Cornea
Controls and focuses the entry of light into the eye
Pupil
Opening that allows light in
Iris
Increase/decrease pupil size to control light levels
Sclera
Protective outer coat,
Muscles attach to it
Upper/Lower Eyelids
Protect eye and decrease visual stimuli when sleeping
Lens
Change focal distance of the eye to allow to be able to focus on objects at various distances
Ciliary Body
Wraps around and controls lens thickness
Suspensory Ligament
Makes lens more or less curved
Vitreous Body
Liquid that fills the eyeball,
Maintain shape of the eyeball
Choroid
Houses arteries and blood vessels that nourish the back of the eye
Retina
Receives light focused from the lens,
Convert light to neural signals,
Send signals to brain
Macula Lutea
Responsible for sharp, detail central vision,
High concentration of cones
Fovea Centralis
Highest concentration of cones in the macula lutea,
Most focused part of retina
Optic Disc
Point of exit for ganglion cell axons (optic nerve) leaving the eye,
Creates blind spot because no rods or cones
Optic Nerve
Transfer visual information from retina to the brain
