Eye Anatomy Flashcards
photoreceptors (rods and cones)
Located in the retina, two types
Retina
Thin white membrane on back wall that contains the rods and cones, it easily peels away from the wall which causes a detachment but it is still attached to wall with optic nerve
Rods
Detect the presence or absence of light and enable us to see in dim light.
Cones
Specialized to detect different wavelengths of light, which we perceive as color
Colorblindness
One or more types of cones are nonfunctional
Iris
Colored portion of the eye in front of ciliary body, helps determine how much light enters the eye
Pupil
Opening surrounded by Iris, Iris controls size of pupil to determine how much light comes through
Lens
a hard, pinkish or yellowish sphere used to focus the light waves on the retina
Vitreous body/humor
a gelatin small filling most of the interior of the eye. (open space filler)
Ciliary body
a black ring of smooth muscle encircling the lens that is responsible for changing the shape of the lens in order to focus, also makes aqueous humor
Optic disk
The portion of the retina where neurons gather to form the optic nerve
Pigmented choroid coat
Dark Layer behind retina that absorbs stray light. In animals that require vision in low-light conditions there is an iridescent coating called the tapetum lucidum
Optic nerve
A small stump that remains on the posterior surface
Sclera
white surface of the eye
Cornea
Cloudy surface over the pupil and iris, should be clear, almost like a film
