Eye Anatomy Flashcards
Uvea
Pigmented ‘middle-layer’ of the eye beneath the sclera. Made up of iris, ciliary body and choroid.
Ciliary body
Production of aqueous
Trabecular meshwork
Drainage of aqueous
Cornea
-Transparent
-Avascular
-Consists of epithelium (which fluorescein dye stains), bowman’s layer, stroma, Descemet’s membrane, endothelium
Extracranial visual pathway
-Rod and cones within the retina send impulses via the retinal ganglion cells. This forms the optic nerve
-The ON leaves the orbit via the optic canal, entering the cranial cavity
Intracranial visual pathway
-Optic Nerve unite in Middle cranial fossa to form chiasm
-Chiasm: Nasal fibres of retina crossover to the contralateral optic tract. The temporal fibres remain ipsilateral
-Optic tract travels to the corresponding cerebral hemisphere to reach LGN Axons from LGN then carry information through the optic radiations.
Retinal circulation
-Central retinal artery
-Retinal arterioles
-Retinal capillaries
-Retinal venules
-Retinal veins
-Central retinal vein
=Supplies the inner 2/3 retina
=Outer 1/3 of retina supplied by diffusion from choroidal circulation
