Eye Flashcards
Pupil
Dark opening of the eye; is black because there is no light reflecting from it
Iris
Coloured portion of the eye
Conjunctiva
Delicate membrane lining the eyelids and covering the eyeball up to the cornea
Cornea
Transparent dome tissue over the iris and pupil
Lens
Bends light rays to bring them into focus on the retina; transparent and located behind the pupil of the eye
Retina
Light sensitive (rods and cones) layer of nerve cell containing photoreceptor cells
Sclera
Tough white outer coat of eyeball
Choroid
Middle, vascular layer of the eye, located between the retina and sclera
Ciliary body
Structure surrounding the lens that connects iris to the choroid, contains ciliary muscles that control the shape of the lens and secretes aqueous liquid
Uvea
- iris
- ciliary body
- choroid
Aqueous humor
Fluid produced by the ciliary body found in the anterior chamber.
Refraction
Bending of light rays by cornea, lens, and fluid of the eye to bring light rays into focus on retina (refract means to break)
Accommodation
Far and near sightedness
Anterior chamber
Area behind the cornea and in front of lens and iris that contains aqueous humor (fluid)
Vitreous humor / chamber
Large soft jelly like region behind the lens
