1st Line TX for infective conjunctivitis

A

Eye Hygiene
- use warm water and cotton pads
- swab the yes gently from inside corner to outside with one wipe
Use and new pad each time and for each eye.

2nd Line Tx for infective Conjunctivitis (drug Tx)

A

chloramphenicol
-use in 2 years +
- ONE drops very 2 hours for first 48 hours then
ONE drop every 4 hours
MAX 5 day use

if chlorampheniol not suitable
- propamidine isethionate (brolene) eye drops
- over 12 years
- 1-2 drops in affected eye QDS
- If no improvement after days seek medical advice.

Overall RED Flags

A
  • hard stone-like lump in eye
  • due to injury/ trauma
  • loss of vision
  • severe pain , esp behind the eyes
  • acute glaucoma - pressure behind eye, associated headaches, blurred vision, hard and tender eye, hazy cornea
  • inflammation of the iris
  • corneal ulcer
    -photophobia

symptoms of bacterial conjunctivitis

A
  • can be one or both eyes
  • sticky yellow/green discharge around eyelashes typically in the morning.
  • some redness to the whites of the eyes.

A

think pink eye
watery eyes
redness of eye
can sometimes experience blurred vision
often follows recent cold/sore throat (upper respiratory tract issues)

TX
1st line - eyelid hygiene
if infection present can use chloramphenicol eye drops

Refer
if underlying condition exacerbating the condition e.g eczema / seborrhoeic dermatitis

lump on / under eyelid
painful
swelling
typically one eye affected

TX
eyelid hygiene
- brolene
1-2 drops in the affected eye up to 4 times a day, if not improvement
-golden eye ointment
apply topically one or twice daily

advise patient
-do not puncture the stye
-to keep eyes clean and wash hand before and after touching eyes.
-don’t share towels
- if no improvement after 4 weeks seek medical help
