You do a cuff leak test to ensure there is no edema or glottic blockage?

  • you want a air leak, it indicates that the airway is clear.

What are the most important steps to follow for extubation?

A
  1. suction (orally and subglotically via evac tube)
  2. Hyperoxygenation Pt. and have other airflow devices ready.
  3. Cuff leak test (by disconnecting Pt from vent)
  4. If Cuff leak test is good and Pt is stable, remove securing device
  5. Pull tube out at the end of inspiration
  6. Suction mouth or ask Pt to cough
  7. oxygenate
  8. perform resp. assessment (auscultate)
