Extrusion Flashcards
Extrusion
Extrusion is the process of creating objects of a fixed cross-sectional shape . A material is pushed through a die of the wanted cross-section.
The two main advantages of extrusion
The two main advantages extrusion than over other manufacturing processes are the ability to create very complex cross-sections and also it can work with materials that are brittle because the material only encounters compressive and shear stresses.
It also forms parts with an excellent surface finish.
The process of extrusion
The process begins by heating the stock material, it is then loaded into the container in the press. A dummy block is placed behind it where the ram then presses on the material to push it out of the die. After the extrusion is stretched in order to straighten it.
What can the extrusion process be done with
The extrusion process can be done with materials hot or cold. Extruded materials include metals, polymers and ceramics. The products of extrusion are generally called extrudates.
