Extrication Flashcards
Hybrid and electric cars normally have the batteries stored where?
Trunk or behind the back seat
— cars have an auxiliary 12v battery for starting the gas motor. It can be located any where within the vehicle.
Hybrid
In case of batter fire you should:
Allow it to burn itself out.
If it’s necessary to control the fire, do so with copious amounts of water from a distance.
Hydrogen fuel:
We should see a production model hydrogen fuel cell within the next –to – years.
5-10
In this type of care that has been used in London taxis there is an electrical chemical property change that produces the electricity used to propel the vehicle.
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicle
Byproducts is heat and water vapor
What is the lighted element know to man, that rises and quickly dissipates?
Hydrogen
To explode, — requires a fuel air mixture 2x’s that of propane and 4x’s that of gasoline.
Hydrogen
These types of cars do not produce any noise with initial acceleration “chock the wheels”
Hybrid cars
Hydrogen cars
What is the initial priority upon arrival at an extrication scene?
Scene stabilization
Followed by vehicle stabilization.
Name 6 hazardous conditions that determine scene safety.
“Tu pac has super ugly friends”
1- traffic control 2 - Powerlines 3- hazardous cargo 4- spills or leaks 5- unstable vehicles 6-fire/explosive conditions
Three points of contact using step chocks is an example of what kind of stabilization?
Basic stabilization
Name three advanced vehicle stabilization techniques.
Tieback, tiedown, triangulate
Windshield removal:
Saws all method
4 steps?
1 puncture
2 Cut
3 support
4 remove
Windshield removal
Asked method
Four steps?
- Two members on each side
- Chop: top mid/toward/down A post
- Chop twice, pass axe, support glass
- Fold onto hood, remove
Door opening
High-lift Jack method
Four steps?
- Haligan Adz on latch
- Jack upside down. Operate
- Air chisel on Nader pin
- D-ring screws
Door opening
Hydraulic method latch side
2 steps
- Spreaders in window. Open creating opening at edge of door
- Tunnel, open spreaders forcing the door outward and open
Door opening
Hydraulic method hinge side
3 steps
- Pinch front fender
- Bottom hinge first, use spreader tips to force door
- Repeat at Top hinge
With this method of door removal you should cut at the smallest point.
Air chisel method
Steering wheel displacement
High lift Jack method
5 steps?
- J hook purchase point 15’
- Ladder crib perpendicular
- 15’ wrap minimum 1.5 times
- Place jack centered, 15’ in hook
5 take slack, operate to lift column
Steering wheel displacement
Come along method
4 steps
- J hook with 6’ chain
- Build slide crib (3-4x4’s)
- Place 12’ oval and wrap 1.5
- Anchor come along 6” pull ring and pull from oval on 12’
Roof flap method
Four steps?
- Determine flap direction (typically F/B)
- Cut posts needed to make flap
- Cut into roof rail
- Use airchisel to cut across roof (4-5” as hinge)
Roof removal method
Four steps?
- Cut all shoulder portions of involved seatbelts
- Cut all posts (stay away from seatbelt reinforcement)
- Remove roof from ext area
- Cover exposed post ends
“Dealing with airbags at the scene” what are the 3 steps?
- Scan for airbags
(WSSA ADDS) - Disconnect battery power
- Maintain 5-10-20 Rule
Tools
Use: stabilizing and pulling
Come along
Tool use
Lifting and pushing
High lift jack
Tool use
Cutting
Cutting tool: air chisel
Use: cutting(including laminated plate glass. Saws all
Tool use: anchoring
Chain
Tool use:
Cutting, pushing, pulling
Hurst hydraulics
How should stabilization be removed?
In the opposite order it was applied.
The terminology a vehicle extrication has been changed to;:
Victim disentanglement
-this means that you do not remove the patient from the vehicle, you remove the vehicle from around the patient.
New technologies concerns for first responders:
4 steps to securing a hybrid or hydrogen car:
- Chock wheels immediately
- Put vehicle in park, remove key least 25’
- If vehicle trans can’t be placed in park and key can’t be removed from the scene, as a lady ditch effort D.C. The HIGH VOLTAGE POWER
- vehicle is functioning properly u can D.C.ing the 12 volt power supply should disconnect the high voltage power supply
You cannot verify —stabilization without having visualized all 6 sides of the vehicles involved, which includes above below the vehicle!
Scene
Definition:
Preventing any further movement of the vehicle without changing its original position
Vehicle stabilization
Once you have stabilized the vehicle, then you must:
Determine what is necessary to access the patient
Always try to OPEN the vehicle doors first
