Extreme Environments Flashcards
What are biomes and ecosystems
Biome - an area that is classified according to what species live there
Ecosystem - the name given to plant and animals that are found in a particular location
The characteristics of Antarctica and the Arctic
Antarctica - the coldest, dryest, and windiest place on Earth, no one lives there full time
The Arctic - gets lots of sunlight in the summer due to the Earths tilt, made of ice
The opportunities and challenges faced by people exploring and living in cold environments
Mineral extraction, energy, fishing and tourism
The Antarctic Treaty
Signed in Washington on December 1 1959 by the 12 countries whose scientist became active in Antarctica
The adaptations plants and animals make to survive in hot deserts
Plants - have a wavy layer of skin to prevent water loss
Animals - camels have an extra layer of eyelashes to prevent sand getting in their eyes
The opportunities and challenges faced by people exploring and living in hot deserts
Low water supply and extreme heat
Understanding desertification and how it is managed
Desertification - when productive land turns into a desert
Manage - land needs to be managed sustainably
How does global atmospheric circulation contribute to the location of global biomes
Global atmospheric circulation creates winds across the planet and leads to areas of high rainfall
