Extreme environment Lesson 6 Flashcards
At other threats are there?
Threat of Human activity
Tourism and ecology
Global climate change
Sense of community ( cultural dilution)
What possible response are there for climate change?
- Buildings pile deeper into the ground
- Findings of new sources of energy
State the global solutions;
Attempt to limit climate change
UNeTP action
Antartic Treaty
What are the local solutions?
- Protected areas
- National Park and conservation style
- giving rights
- limiting resource exploitation
- Arviat Climate Change Adaptation partnership
What are the protected areas?
Artic National Wildlife Refuge( ANWR)
What rights do they give?
Land and protection to indigenous peoples and their traditional lifestyles
What are the main causes of desertification?
- natural disasters
- population change
- underdevelopment
- best land seized by TNC
- civil wars/ political instability
- salinisation
What are some of the land use causes?
- intensive grazing
- over cultivation
- over exploitation of vegetation
- salinisation of irrigation of Cropland
How does salinisation occur?
When water in soils evaporates in high temperature, drawing salts from the soil to the surface.
Describe these salts?
These salts are toxic to many plants and make the land unusable.
What happens to the atmosphere due to climate change?
Increased aridity
What happens at increased aridity?
Rainfall is already low ( could become full blown deserts)
In which direction is the Sahel rain belt moving in?
North ( away from populated areas)
What do the Normads lose?
Livelihood
What happens at sand dune threats?
Old sand dune systems reactivate and start to move again.
