flush with 10-20mls NS watching for infiltration, inflm/ ENSURE PATENCY
Describe infiltration scale
0- nothing
1- blanched edema up to 1”, no pain, cool
2-= Blanched edema 1- 6”, cool, pain or no pain
3- Skin blanched, translucent
Gross edema > 15cm (6”) in any direction
Cool to touch
Mild –moderate pain, maybe numbness
4- Skin blanched, translucent
Skin tight, leaking
Skin discolored, bruised, swollen gross edema > 15cm (6”) in any direction
Deep pitting tissue edema
Circulatory impairment- Moderate severe pain
What is a cytotoxic drug
Hazardous (cytotoxic) drugs are detrimental or destructive to cells within the body. E.g. drugs that are used to treat cancer
PPE for cytotoxic drugs
Moisture resistant long sleeved gown with cuffs
Chemotherapy approved gloves
Eye protection : Mask with full shield or goggles

Where will you find info that pt is on cytotoxic drugs
Pharmacy labels medications as ‘hazardous/cytotoxic’ on the Medication Administration Record
Nursing : hazardous precautions on patients’ care plan
Sign on the personal protective equipment (PPE) holder or outside the patients room
Notification of Hazardous Precautions on Safety Communication Board
MNGMT of a hazardous spill
Immediately cover the spill with a moisture resistant backed pad (ex. ‘blue pad’)
Secure area- notify staff and family
In the event of a hazardous spill, either medication or body fluid, call a code brown
Do not clean up the spill yourself
Specially trained housekeeping staff will clean up
MNGMT of staff exposure
Remove clothing, place in garbage bag
Shower for approximately 15 minutes in warm shower using copious amounts of soap
Eye Splash: rinse affected eye with 1 liter of eye wash solution
Report and seek assistance
