Extracting Salt Flashcards
How can salt be obtained?
By evaporating seawater or from solid deposits in the ground.
How can underground salt deposits be extracted?
Mining the solid (often called rock salt)
Pumping water into the salt deposit and extracting the solution of salt (called brine)
When is salt that is used for roads more useful?
When it has been extracted as a solid mixed in with grit and sand.
When is salt that is to be purified more efficient?
When extracted as a solution because this will leave insoluble minerals behind.
What can extracting salt affect?
The Environment
Give an example of this.
Dissolving underground salt deposits using water can lead to the ground about subsiding and building possibly collapsing
Give another example of this.
Salt waste can affect plants and animals by drying them up, through the process of osmosis.
