Extracting metals Flashcards
How are metals extracted?
Using the reactivity series, if the metal that you want to extract from the ore is less reactive than carbon then the metal can be extracted using carbon, this is called reduction. Then carbon can be reacted with the ore the leave zinc all by itself. In this reaction the zinc is reduced and the carbon is oxidized.
What are the environmental effects of extracting metals?
Loss of habitat for local wildlife, Dust from blasting settles on leaves blocking sunlight and preventing photosynthesis, Air pollution (dust) causes asthma.
What are the social effects of extracting metals?
Noise pollution from blasting and machinery, reduces local tourism, other related industries move into the are, restoring the site after its use, better roads will be built to cope with traffic, more local jobs, increase in traffic to and from the quarry.
What are the economical effects of extracting metals?
Limestone is quarried relatively easily as it is common, boost to the local economy (more money brought to the area).
